ABOUT GANDUM

Gandum Village is a boutique hotel in Alentejo.

Gandum is a small hotel in the countryside, near Montemor-o-Novo. A place built with time, care, and a close relationship with the land that surrounds it.

Fourteen hectares change the perspective.

Gandum Village is located in Montemor-o-Novo, in the heart of Alentejo, on a 14-hectare property within the protected area of Monfurado. It is less than an hour from Lisbon and only 3 km from the city center, overlooking the castle of Montemor. Far enough to feel the countryside, close enough to stay connected.

Paths, streams, cork oaks, olive trees, and a historic aqueduct cross the property. Trails follow the watercourse, cross the forest, and open up to wide views. The landscape changes with the seasons and is part of everyday life—it is not just a backdrop.

You won't be alone here.

Sheep and chickens are part of the daily rhythm of the farm, contributing to its self-sufficiency. Wildlife is also present. Storks, birds of prey, amphibians, insects, and small mammals thrive because the land was designed to welcome biodiversity, not to control it.

We build the old-fashioned way. On purpose.

Gandum was built using traditional rammed earth construction, utilizing local soil and low-impact materials. Existing buildings were restored rather than replaced. These choices were not aesthetic gestures, but practical decisions shaped by climate, location, and durability.

We try to leave more than we take.

Regenerative agriculture guides everything that happens on the land. Soil cover, composting, and the integration of crops and animals allow food to be produced while restoring soil health and biodiversity. Here, agriculture is part of the ecosystem—it is not separate from it.

Theory met practice.

Gandum Village was founded by João Almeida and Martina Wiedemar, both trained in sustainable development and climatology. After years of working in research and consulting, they decided to put theory into practice by creating a place that could be lived in, tested, and improved over time.
