CITY CONCERNED
When Montemor breaks the mold
For a few days each year, Montemor-o-Novo undergoes a transformation.
Spaces that normally go unnoticed become stages. The city fills with artists, creators, musicians, performers, and people who come on purpose—not by chance.
Cidade Preocupada is a multidisciplinary festival that combines performing arts, music, cinema, critical thinking, and artistic experimentation. It takes place in the city, in the surrounding villages, and in unlikely places. It does not follow an obvious path. And it never repeats itself in the same way.
It's an event for those who like to arrive without knowing exactly what they'll find — but know it will be worth it.
A festival that takes over the city (seriously)
The program is spread across various venues in Montemor-o-Novo and Casa Branca: old factories, streets, historic buildings, cultural centers, open and closed spaces.
There are shows, exhibitions, concerts, installations, workshops, and moments that happen only once.
Some proposals are discreet. Others are intense. All demand attention.
It's not a festival where you "see everything."
It's a festival you have to experience.
Because it's a good reason to come from Lisbon
The Concerned City does not take place in Lisbon.
And don't try to compete with what's already there.
That is precisely what makes it special.
Those who come, come on purpose. They come to break out of their usual routine, to see artistic work in progress, to talk, to think, to see the city in a different light—and often to stay for more than a day.
For many, it is the perfect excuse for a weekend (or more) in Alentejo.
Staying in Gandum during the Concerned City
During the festival, Gandum becomes a peaceful base for those who want to enjoy the program at a leisurely pace.
During the day, the city.
At the end of the afternoon, the field.
At night, I get some real rest.
It is common to have guests who come specifically to Cidade Preocupada — artists, audiences, technical teams, curious people. People who prefer to stay away from the noise, but close to everything that matters.
When it happens
The Concerned City is usually held in June.
The exact dates vary each year and are announced by the organization in advance.
If it's on your radar, it's a good idea to book early—both the festival and your accommodation.
Worth knowing
The schedule changes every year.
Not everything is announced at the outset.
Some things only make sense when you're there.
And that's what makes you want to come back.
